The Southdown Institute

Highly regarded worldwide as a Center of Excellence in its field of specialized health care, the Southdown Institute is located just north of Toronto Ontario, Canada. From a modest start treating addictions and mental illness in 1965, “Southdown” is now a modern, state of the art accredited residential treatment facility. It offers a broad spectrum of psychological treatment, spiritual wellness and prevention programs delivered in a communal setting for Catholic clergy, vowed religious and others from across North America and throughout the English-speaking world.

The Position

Reporting to an independent Board of Directors, the CEO will be the “face and voice” of Southdown. The mandate is to integrate the best of contemporary psychological sciences and practice with the wisdom of the Catholic spiritual tradition.

Southdown has a full time staff of 40 including an interdisciplinary group of professionals, management staff and support personnel. The CEO has overall responsibility for the delivery of multi-modal intensive residential and patient treatment and prevention programs for this 22-bed facility and assisting Catholic leadership teams across North America in addressing the wellness needs of their membership.

The Candidate

This unique opportunity will be of particular interest to religious leaders possessing postgraduate clinical credentials (MA/MSW/PhD) and a deep appreciation of the vision, mission and values of Southdown and the vital role it plays in helping those who serve the Church.  It calls for:

  • A blend of strategic skills and relevant experience to spearhead Southdown offerings that align with ongoing changing times / needs of the Church and helping those that serve;
  • A contemporary leadership style; solid interpersonal and communication skills to interface effectively with the Board of Directors; the leadership of dioceses and religious congregations; a variety of external stakeholders including other treatment providers, the media and the greater Catholic community; and,
  • The capacity to oversee activities of an experienced management group engaged in finance / budgeting, human resources, communications and public relations.
